Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey Enters Innocent Plea to Allegations of Misleading Lawmakers
Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to lawmakers and obstructing a legislative process.
The former director's attorney entered the plea acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would attempt to have the proceedings dismissed for several factors including that his defendant, a detractor of former President Trump, was being singled out.
James Comey was charged shortly after the former president urged his attorney general to move forward against him.
Judicial Process
In court on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald informed the court they intended to present multiple petitions to throw out the legal matter before a legal hearing, stating the prosecution was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully designated to handle the proceedings.
Mr Comey's case was originally managed by the original attorney, who left his position under pressure from the former president after his investigation into another rival - the New York official - failed to file indictments.
Courtroom Atmosphere
James Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his partner, Patrice Failor and offspring Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration recently fired.
Following the reading to the magistrate read his rights and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, James Comey was asked if he comprehended the charges.
"I do your honour. Thank you very much," he told the court.
Historical Information
Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about several months into the former president's first term as national leader. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Russia and the election effort.
During his tenure, the director caused a backlash from liberal politicians when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was examining Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Legal actions against the candidate were not pursued, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.
Present Charges
The federal government claim the former director gave untrue statements to the legislature during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he provided false information to the Senate by stating he had not permitted someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to news outlets details about the government examinations.
Government lawyers also allege James Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, obstruct and slow" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.
Public Statements
Via social media the former director shared to his Instagram after he was indicted, he stated he was not guilty and alleged Trump of conducting himself like a "tyrant".
"We have understood for years that there are costs to challenging Donald Trump," he stated. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "So let's have a legal proceeding."
The charges against Mr Comey surfaced after the former president published on social media insisting on his attorney general, Pam Bondi, prosecute the former director and other people.
